Update from the Chairman
We are proud to announce the formal establishment of a Wellington Samoan Women’s team this year. This is the first time it has officially come under the auspices of the WSRU. This is a huge milestone for WSRU in 2015.
The Wellington Samoan Boys Under 18’s team has been formally included in the U18 Provincial Rugby Competition. After two years of filling in for other provincial teams, we are now officially in. Other teams in the competition include Wanganui, East Coast, Horowhenua Kapiti, Wairarapa Bush, Wellington and Wellington Centurion.
The Wellington Samoan Men’s team have begun their 2015 season by beating Wairarapa Bush’s Heartland team 47 to 29.
The Village Kings Tournament has expanded to another level and it is now called Village Kings International. We started Village Kings in 2012to support and encourage the development of players of Samoan descent and to ensure young Samoan players maintain connection with their heritage. However, to reflect the strong Pacific make-up of Wellington’s rugby community, WSRU has decided to expand the competition to include village teams from other Pacific Nations including: Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Maori. The tournament will be played in a 10-a-side format on Saturday 24 October.
Welcome to our new Executive Committee members this year: Misiluni Moananu, Gail Ah-Hi, John Hewitt, Jon Masaga and Luisa Tuisamoa. I also extend a warm welcome to all the sub committee members and team coaches and management. Thank you for your voluntary work and efforts.
A big fa’amalo to our Executive Adviser, Namulauulu Alama Ieremia, who is also the Assistant Coach for Manu Samoa, on the historic All Blacks and Manu Samoa game in July. Great achievement!
It is a struggle every year to source funding and sponsorship to fund our representative programmes, games and events. The Executive Committee is working extremely hard to ensure that we are able to support all of our teams. I take this opportunity to humbly ask, if you would like to offer any funding or sponsorship to help us achieve our goals, please contact Jon Masaga.
Thank you to all those who have donated funds through sponsorship; time and any other means of supporting our union. It is greatly appreciated.
Lastly, I thank the Wellington Rugby Union for their support in ensuring tournaments are facilitated well and its resources are shared for the development of rugby in the capital.
May we all have a prosperous representative season and enjoy our local rugby tournaments.
Talosia ia natia mala ‘ae naitoa manu, ma ia suamili faasauga masani.
